F2 282 Ride with Tushingham Vulcan 6.0 – wind SSW 20 to 25 mph 27.56 knot max., 26.36 knot ave., 16.22 knot hour, 24.13 knot mile, 43.50 km., 15.92 knot alpha. After a top 8-mile hike in the Welsh Mountains to Aber Falls we head down to Llanfairfechan to see if Steve Carter was windsurfing as its again very breezy. With the wind cross off and no sign of Steve I think he must have gone to Rhosneigr so Mag makes a delicious sausage salad but then she spots Steve well out to sea. So, I quickly finish lunch, realise Steve is out with his 6m so nearly rig 6.5 but there is lots of white water and it looks very windy so I rig the smallest sail I have with me my 6m. With the tide high you have to launch from the concrete slipway past several anglers. After a short wobble out, you hit the wind and I think I am not going to last long as a little overpowered. Also, I had just replaced a broken harness line and it wasn’t in the right place so head to a very stony beach to move it and notice my mast is not sleeved properly so have to derig to sort it out! The sea is better in this direction more rolling swell than chop so it was good fun sailing broad if a bit scary at times, the 6m and 115 lt. were fine in 25 mph of wind, in fact if you sailed too far out the wind went light! Steve was out the best part of three hours, I don’t know how he does it day after day but he rarely drops a gybe which is my biggest failing perhaps I should stop sailing long distances and concentrate on turning around, you think I would have cracked it after 36 yes 36 windsurfing, God I feel old now I have worked that out! I had a good hour and a half, got some nice times in a big sea and got my past mile of the week and with the white water disappearing and the wind dropping I called it a day. The forecast thank goodness is for the wind to drop so we can at last go off and explore Anglesey. We have a chat with Steve before heading a short distance down the coast to a small carpark by the sea at Aber Ogwen. Photo Gallery Here |
